The name means "flower of flowers." Ylang ylang flower petals are strewn upon the beds of the villagers where it is grown and distilled on wedding nights.

Ylang ylang is a tall tropical tree about 20meters (60 feet) high with large, tender, fragrant pink, mauve or yellow flowers.

The tree is cultivated in Sumatra, Reunion, Madagascar and the Comores.

Scent: Sweet and exotic, sensual floral scent. Very seductive and believed to possess aphrodisiac qualities.

Once Ylang ylang was a popular ingredient of hair preparations in Europe and was known as Macassar oil. The word "anti-macassar" originated from this, since an anti-maccasar was used to keep hair oil from staining upholstered furniture.

Properties and Uses: Sedative and anti-spasmodic. It is a relaxing and soothing scent that may help to relieve anxiety and calm the nervous system. Often used in blends for promoting a restful sleep. Relaxes body, mind and spirit. Alleviates anger and frustration. Anti-depressant, aphrodisiac. This is the first distillation and very powerful. Ylang ylang oil can be particularly useful with rapid breathing and rapid heartbeat, and it can also help with reducing high blood pressure.

It can be useful for intestinal infections.
